Which doctor do I see?

As in human medicine, veterinary medicine offers the service of general practitioners and specialist care. If your pet has never been to a veterinarian, has a new symptom or requires routine care, an appointment with a general practitioner is an excellent choice. If you have been referred by your family veterinarian or local general practitioner for specialist services, please see our specialist referral services page for more information on the speciality services available. Referral from a general practitioner offers several advantages such as maximising the chance that you will be referred to the correct speciality, enabling open communication and a holistic approach to your pet care with collaboration between your family veterinarian and specialist veterinarian, easily accessible care and ongoing support through your local veterinarian.

What is a veterinary specialist?

A veterinary specialist is a qualified veterinarian who has undergone rigorous additional training for several years in a specific discipline. To be recognised as a specialist veterinarian in South Africa, a veterinarian undergoes a training programme at dedicated facilities of at least 3-4 years under the direct supervision of veterinary specialists of various disciplines. During this time, the specialist in training (known as a resident) needs to complete a research project, additional master’s degree or equivalent qualification, present at national and international scientific congresses, as well as publish at least two original articles in scientific journals. Prior to receiving specialist recognition, the resident undergoes extensive examinations in the theoretical and practical aspects of their chosen speciality.
